We all know earth as this very basic planet, the only planet you can breathe on, the only one who can harbor life and all. We finally got so bored of earth that we now actually seek to discover other planets. But in this article, we will discuss 10 amazingly interesting facts about the earth that will definitely not leave you indifferent and hopefully will restore your amazement about the earth. Let’s get to it.
1. SCIENTISTS PREDICT THE DISCOVERY OF A 9th PLANET.
Scientist actually do believe that a planet roughly 10 times larger than the earth exists, somewhere in the universe. Knowing the earth is a little more than 9 Million Kilometers in circumference, just imagine how huge this new planet could be. Scientists promised that it will probably be discovered within the next 16 months or so. Well, I don’t know about you but I can’t wait to see pictures and facts that demonstrate the gigantic size of this new planet.
2. THE EARTH IS THE ONLY PLANET WHERE FIRE CAN BURN
Strange right? Why is that so, you may ask. This is because earth is the only known planet that has enough oxygen to sustain combustion. I guess you know what that means right? No cooked food on the other planets and to all the smokers; no smoking. So if you’ve been trying to quit smoking for some time now, you could try “Mars Therapy” which is simply you going to planet Mars. It makes no sense I know because there, you won’t be able to breathe either. But the brighter side is there can’t be any bushfire there either first because there can’t be any fire and secondly, there are no bushes. Maybe some other planet able to sustain combustion will be discovered someday. Who knows?
3. THE THREE GORGES DAM IN CHINA IS SO MASSIVE THAT IT HAS SLOWED THE ROTATION OF THE EARTH
A dam big enough to slow the rotation of the earth, that’s some mind blowing information. You’re probably wondering how that’s possible right? Let me break it down for you. It’s basically about the mass of the water supply because when the dam is full, it weighs more 39 trillion kilograms (42 billion tons). Now that’s what we call a huge amount of water that actually is capable of affecting the earth’s moment of inertia, hence it’s rotation. That’s quite a strange fact, right?
4. A MEDIEVAL SCHOLAR PREDICTED THE EXISTENCE OF A LANDMASS BETWEEN ASIA AND EUROPE
So actually, this Medieval scholar named Al-Biruni after accurately measuring earth’s radius and judging by the size of Asia and Africa came up with the conclusion that a humanly inhabited landmass between Europe and Asia probably existed, with the size of the known continents and similar geological features as well. And your questions are probably how come? Why was it not discovered before? I really don’t know myself. So the maps we have of the earth now are incomplete? And I answer actually yeah! But well, it’s just a prediction for now, but let’s prepare to welcome a new continent on our maps soon, or not…
5. A WOBBLE OF EARTH’S AXIS CUASES SAHARA TO CYCLE BETWEEN DESERT AND GRASSLAND EVERY 23,000 YEARS
Just one thing, I would have loved to see this! So the desert can actually become a fruitful field. This is just some mind blowing information and I’m sure you too wonder: “how come?”. You won’t believe that approximately 6000 years ago, the Sahara was tropical and scientists still try to find out if the change was sudden or gradual.
6. THERE ARE HYPOTHESISED PLANETS BETTER SUITED FOR LIFE THAN EARTH
Also called super-habitable planets, these planets are considered to be better suited for the emergence and evolution of life. The concept was introduced in 2014 by René Heller and John Armstrong. And they claimed that a planet could be non-earthlike and yet provide more suitable conditions for life than the earth ever did or does. Once again, it’s just a hypothesis but I guess we’re all anxious to see this new hypothesized planet.
7. THE LARGEST KNOWN NOISE WAS CREATED BY A VOLCANO
This volcano amazingly produced sound waves that altered air pressure on earth for 5 good days! And also, that noise ruptured the ear drums of sailors that were up to 40 miles away. So this fact is for those who thought babies actually were the ones that produced the loudest noise! But on a more serious note. the sound was so loud that it circled the earth 4 Times. The eruption occurred in 1883 at 10:02 A.M. on the island of Krakatoa in Indonesia.
8. THE AFRICAN CONTINENT IS BEING SPLIT INTO TWO
Due to the birth of a new ocean, the African continent is gradually being split into two. This started in 2005 when an 8 Meter long and 6 Kilometer wide stretch of the earth opened up in a period of just 10 days. It opened up in Ethiopia, to be exact, and is due to hot molten rock tickling from beneath the earth and according to Dr. James Hammond, “It will pull apart, sink down deeper and deeper and eventually, parts of southern Ethiopia and Somalia will drift off, create a new island, and we’ll have a smaller Africa and a very big island that floats out into the Indian Ocean.”
9. THE SUN PROVIDES US WITH MORE ENERGY IN AN HOUR THAN WE CAN USE IN A YEAR
This was actually demonstrated by a study in 2002. World Energy Assessment found that the annual potential of solar energy was 1,575–49,837 Exajoules (EJ) which is much more than the total World energy consumption, which was 559.8 EJ in 2012.
10. HUMANS ONLY HAVE ABOUT 1 BILLION YEARS LEFT ON EARTH
This is because the sun will change and become hot enough to boil and evaporate our oceans.
And there you have it, folks! I hope you were as amazed about these facts as, I was.
