10 things you may not know about Netflix

1. Founders

The founders of Netflix are Marc Bernays Randolph and Wilmot Reed Hastings Jr., Marc is an American tech entrepreneur, speaker and advisor. He was born on the 29th of April, 1958. Reed. Reed is also an entrepreneur and a philanthropist. Reed was born on the 8th of October, 1960.

2. Netflix or Kibbel?

Netflix tried out quite a few names before settling with the one as we know it today. There were multiple names laid on the table, but when the company was being incorporated, the owners named it Kibble.com. Kibble.com was only a placeholder and later on it was changed to Netflix.

3. Average search time of users

In 2016, Netflix analyzed how long it took the average user to select a movie or show. According to the study, most people browsed for less than 2 minutes and found something they wanted to watch. During this 2 minutes the users looked at 10 to 20 titles before making their choice.

4. A lot of content

Netflix has many titles, almost too many to count. But how big is their content library exactly? Believe it or not, Netflix has over one petabyte of content. A petabyte is equivalent to 1024 terabytes or a million gigabytes! That’s a lot of content and storage space. Because those numbers are so immensely high, Netflix came up with the idea to design its own hardware. Netflix is using two types of servers, one of the servers is hardware based and the other one is flash drive based.

5. Netflix originals

A Netflix Original is content that is produced, co-produced, or distributed by Netflix exclusively on their services. Netflix funds their original shows differently than other TV networks when they sign a project, providing the money upfront and immediately ordering two seasons of most series. In March 2011 Netflix began with their original content by producing the political drama House of Cards. After House of Cards they made more and more series and movies. In 2018, after the success of Netflix’s original content, the company decided to spend some more money on original series and films.

6. Netflix & Chill

Netflix and chill is an Internet term used either as an invitation to watch Netflix together or as a invitation for sexual activity. Since its first recorded, nonsexual use in a tweet posted in 2009, the phrase has gained popularity within the Twitter community and other social media sites like Facebook and Vine. By 2015, Netflix and chill had become an Internet meme and it was mainly used on teenage social media’s.

7. Own awards show

Did you know that Netflix had their own awards show called The Flixies. It wasn’t a very serious awards show, the awards show was announced and held in 2013 and had plenty of publicity. However, the awards, which were supposed to be voted on, haven’t returned since. Maybe we will see another Netflix awards show in the future, but only time can tell.

8. Amount of views

Netflix has more than 130 million customers all over the world watching its TV shows and movies. The estimated number of people that Netflix reaches lays around 300 million. The average Netflix users watches 10 hours per week, that’s almost 2 hours a day, quite a lot if you asked me.

9. Working at Netflix

It really pays of working for Netflix, their starting salary is $18 dollars per hour, plus your own free Netflix subscription. The employees of Netflix can take as much time off as they want, as long it’s booked in advance and their work isn’t affected by it. You could say it’s a dream job.

10. Blockbuster

In 2000 Netflix had just about 300,000 subscribers and used the U.S. Postal Service for the delivery of their DVD’s, Netflix was losing money and offered to be acquired by Blockbuster for $50 million. Netflix said that they would rename themselves to Blockbuster.com. The offer was declined by Blockbuster. Blockbuster is bankrupt and Netflix is currently worth over $25 billion.
